Hello, my lovely mama’s to be!
Pregnancy is such an exciting journey, full of changes - some expected, some surprising. While everyone talks about the cravings and the mood swings, one thing that often gets overlooked is how your skin might start behaving differently. Trust me, it’s not just about that famous “pregnancy glow” (although, yes, you will be glowing!). From unexpected breakouts to pigmentation, let’s dive into the skin changes you might notice and how to handle them gracefully and confidently.
Why Does My Skin Change During Pregnancy?
Blame it on the hormones, honey! The incredible surge of hormones during pregnancy is the main culprit behind most of the skin changes you'll experience. These hormones, particularly oestrogen, and androgens, can have quite the effect on your skin, sometimes in ways that are, well, not so glamorous.
Vascular Changes: The Glow and Beyond
First things first - let’s talk about that pregnancy glow. It’s real, and it’s all thanks to the increased blood flow that makes your skin look flushed and radiant. However, that same increase in blood circulation can also lead to less welcome changes like spider naevi (tiny, visible blood vessels) and telangiectasia (dilated capillaries). These tend to pop up around your second trimester and are more common if you have fair skin. The good news? They often fade after your baby arrives.
Acne During Pregnancy: When the Breakouts Come Back
Just when you thought you’d left acne behind in your teenage years, those pesky breakouts can make a return. Increased androgen levels during pregnancy can lead to an increase in sebum production, which, unfortunately, means more clogged pores and those dreaded spots. Some lucky mums might notice their skin clears up, but if you’re dealing with more breakouts than usual, don’t stress - there are safe ways to manage it. We’ll get into the do’s and don’ts for pregnancy-safe acne treatments in a bit.
Pregnancy Pigmentation: The “Mask of Pregnancy”
Ever heard of melasma or chloasma? They’re fancy terms for the dark patches that can appear on your face during pregnancy, often called the “mask of pregnancy”. This usually shows up as symmetrical dark spots on your forehead, cheeks, above lips and chin. While it’s more noticeable in darker skin tones, anyone can experience it and while it might fade after your baby is born, sometimes these patches stick around a bit longer and may need treatment post-pregnancy.
What’s Safe to Use? A Guide to Pregnancy-Friendly Skincare
The million-dollar question: What can I use on my skin while pregnant? Safety is the priority, so while you might need to put some of your go-to products on hold, there are still plenty of options to keep your skin looking fab.
Use with caution: Salicylic Acid & Glycolic Acid: Are often used for acne and exfoliation, but in pregnancy, it's best to stick to lower concentrations. There’s not a ton of research on their safety in high doses, so keep it gentle.
Use with caution: Azelaic Acid: This multitasker not only helps with acne but also with pigmentation, and it’s generally considered safe for use during pregnancy.
Use with caution: Benzoyl Peroxide: Often found in acne treatments, only a small percentage is absorbed into your skin. While it’s likely safe, it’s always best to consult with your healthcare provider.
Avoid: Topical Retinoids: Sadly, these powerhouse ingredients are a no-go during pregnancy. They’re linked to potential risks, so it’s better to avoid them altogether.
Avoid: Hydroquinone & Arbutin: Both are skin-lightening agents but should be avoided during pregnancy due to the high absorption rates and potential risks.
Essential: Sunscreen: Sunscreen is non-negotiable, especially if you’re dealing with pigmentation. Opt for physical (mineral) sunscreens that reflect UV rays instead of chemical ones.
