Whether you’re stressed, experiencing sleepless nights or have a genetic tendency towards blue bags, dark circles are an incredibly common concern. On top of this, the delicate skin around our eyes starts to wrinkle as we age. All of this makes the eyes a problem area for many – so what can be done about them? Polynucleotides might just be the future of injectable skincare and are rapidly gaining traction for their ability to rejuvenate and regenerate the skin, particularly around the eye area, promoting collagen stimulation whilst firming and contouring the skin and tackling issues like dark circles and crepey skin head on.

What are Polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides are naturally occurring biopolymers composed of long chains of nucleotides, which are the building blocks of DNA and RNA. These molecules play a crucial role in cellular functions, including replication, transcription, and repair of genetic material. In the context of skincare, polynucleotides are derived from salmon DNA, which has been found to be highly compatible with human skin. When injected into the skin, polynucleotides can stimulate cellular regeneration, enhance tissue repair, and improving overall skin health.

How do Polynucleotides Work?

Polynucleotides work through promoting fibroblast activity. Fibroblasts are essential cells in the skin responsible for producing collagen, elastin, and other extracellular matrix components that maintain skin structure and elasticity. As we age, the activity of fibroblasts diminishes, leading to thinner skin, reduced elasticity, and the formation of wrinkles and dark circles. Polynucleotides stimulate these fibroblasts, encouraging them to produce more collagen and elastin, thereby rejuvenating the skin.

Moreover, polynucleotides have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce puffiness and discoloration under the eyes. By enhancing microcirculation and promoting lymphatic drainage, polynucleotides can also alleviate fluid retention and improve skin tone, making the under-eye area look brighter and more refreshed.

So, Can They Really Combat Dark Under-Eye Circles?

Clinical studies and anecdotal evidence prove that treatments involving polynucleotides can indeed yield noticeable improvements. Patients often report a reduction in darkness and puffiness, as well as a smoother and more youthful appearance of the under-eye area.

The procedure for polynucleotide treatment typically involves multiple sessions, where the substance is injected into the skin using fine needles. These sessions are spaced out over several weeks to allow for gradual and sustained improvements. Some topical formulations containing polynucleotides are also available, though their efficacy might be less pronounced compared to injections.

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

We generally carry out two to three sessions a few weeks apart, and when someone comes back for their second session, we will already be able to see an improvement. There is a big focus now on biostimulators, which stimulate the body to do what we want it to do, and people understand that you don’t necessarily see the effects immediately after walking out of your appointment. After the initial duo or trio of appointments, we recommend a treatment every three to four months. The fibroblasts in our skin that produce collagen survive for around 90 days, so at that three-month mark, another treatment may be needed to boost that collagen stimulation once again.

Polynucleotides present an exciting advancement in the realm of skin rejuvenation, particularly for addressing the stubborn issue of dark under-eye circles. By harnessing the regenerative power of these biopolymers, it is possible to enhance skin health, reduce discoloration, and achieve a more youthful appearance. As research continues and more people explore this treatment, polynucleotides could become a mainstay in the fight against dark under-eye circles, offering hope to those looking for a brighter, more rejuvenated look.
